Dalian is an economically diverse city with a number of different major industries, including machine manufacturing, petrochemicals and oil refining, electronics and IT, and a strong tourism industry.  In recent years, the municipal government and the Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) have also transformed the city into Northeastern China's financial capital.  Over 20 overseas banks and financial institutions have set up offices in the city, more than in any other city in Northeast China.  Thanks to its three special economic zones (Dalian Development Zone, Dalian Free Trade Zone and Dalian Hi-Tech Industrial Zone), a large number of foreign companies have moved into the city, most notably in the IT field with large companies like Intel and IBM operating large plants and offices in the city.

The DCE, with its location at the base of Northeast China, is a central element in the national government's strategy to revitalize Northeast China, which has traditionally been the main industrial base for the country.  Crops such as soybeans and maize, both of which are traded at the exchange, comprise key components of the region's agricultural economy.  The energy industry is also an important part of the region's economy.  Major industries include the steel, automobile, shipbuilding, aircraft manufacturing, and petroleum refining industries.  Going forward, the DCE aims to better serve Northeast China's economy by offering products that allow the region's businesses to better manage risk, serve the region's agriculture and raise farmer's income, and launch the city of Dalian into the realm of key global financial centers.

Dalian Futures Plaza, the new headquarters of the Dalian Commodity Exchange is the tallest building in Northeast China.  It stands 242.8 meters tall with 53 floors and is a symbol of Dalian's status as Northeast China's financial capital.  The plaza is adjacent to Xinghai Square, which is the largest city square in Asia, as well as the Dalian International Exhibition Center.  Dalian International Finance Center is the first phase in Dalian's plan to build a major financial center in the Xinghai Square district.  The project was designed by GMP Architects, the largest architecture firm in Germany with a global reputation for quality.  Construction work was provided by China Architecture Engineering Corporation, the largest construction group and engineering contractor in China.

Award-Winning Quality
Dalian International Finance Center is the first construction project in Northeast China to receive awards for land and energy efficiency presented by the Ministry of Construction.  The building marks the best of its kind in Dalian, with features such as a double-glazed low-e glass curtain, a grand lobby with a ceiling height of 9.5 meters, 23 Toshiba elevators, a helipad on the roof, a 10,000M trunk line of optic cable and a three-way independent power supply to ensure that market activity is as fast as possible and experiences no interruptions.
